Home Mission Project - 1st Meeting on Wednesday

To everyone involved with the 2010 Home Mission Project -

I just wanted to remind all of you that we have our first official Home Mission Project meeting this Wednesday, March 3, at 6:45PM. The meeting will be held in the youth room. Sorry if you missed the first announcement - I know that not everyone was able to be in church this past Sunday. We are asking that each of you bring a parent/guardian with you to this first meeting, since we will be going over a lot of very important information. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I am very much looking forward to starting this process again with you all! See you on Wednesday!

Mission Project Reminders...

Hey Everyone!

We are coming "down-to-the-wire" for our Home Mission Project! Here are a couple of quick, but very important reminders...

*Our car wash fundraiser is THIS Saturday, May 30th. Please arrive by 9:30 AM and be prepared to stay until 2:30 PM. Also, each of you need to bring a parent, guardian or other responsible adult with you that is willing and able to help wash cars!

*On Wednesday, June 3rd, please remember to arrive at 5:30 PM for training, instead of 6:45. We will be working all the way through the normal time of 8:00 PM.

*Your sports bottles, hopefully full of change, ;-) are due on Wednesday, June 3rd!

*Only a few of you came to puppet practice on Wednesday...that's not good! I understand that stuff comes up, but less than half of you were there. Puppets play a big part in our ministry this summer. Please make sure that you are here for practice this Sunday night at 5:00.

*If you have not turned in the payment that was due a few weeks ago, I need it ASAP.

*Don’t forget to go over the VBS songs and
witnessing techniques!

*Continue to pray for an amazing week of ministry!

2009 State Youth Convention Recap

Hey Everyone!
State Youth Convention was last weekend, and if you missed it, you missed an AWESOME time! God moved in amazing ways, and we all had a great time.

The speaker for the weekend was Steve Carrier, a former member of PowerTeam. He performed some "feats of strength" (like ripping a phonebook in half, bending metal bars, and crushing stacks of bricks) and gave his testimony.

The worship band was Daniel's Window, which came in all the way from Chicago to be with us. They were really great! Be watching for their CD in the youth room soon!

He's challenging believers to take this week to focus on God's Word more, and less on things of this world. Each day he will be posting a video devotional with some thoughts and scripture. I am pleased to announce that the new Exodus CD, Give Love Away, is now part of the MBC Youth CD Library! It will be "officially" featured in February, but it is part of the library now, so make sure to check it out! They did an awesome job at the winter retreat, and this album highlights just some of the many songs that they play.

Winter Retreat 2009

Well..what can I say? The Winter Retreat was AMAZING! The Retreat is an Association-wide youth event, held at Doubling Gap Center. The theme was "A Student God Can Use," and our speaker for the weekend was John Richardson, who did an awesome job. The worship band was Exodus, a ministry team from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. They were amazing as well, not only as a band, but in leading us in true worship.
There was also time for some fun, as we competed in a team competition all weekend. It also snowed while we were there, so many of the students took advantage of the sledding hill out back.
The food was awesome too...thanks so much to Mrs. Sensenig and Mrs. Hockenberry for going along to cook for us!
All in all, it was an awesome weekend of fellowship, worship and fun!

On Wednesday, we took a little trip to see Hershey's "Sweet Lights." Two weeks ago, we packed shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. It was a ton of fun, but more importantly, we were helping children in need around the world. This year, we ended up packing 130 boxes and raised over $500 between us and ACCA...that's a record! We've never done that well before. Praise the Lord! After packing, wrapping and writing letters, we headed up to Gilly's for some bowling. It was a great day...here's a couple of pics:

Christian Guitar Hero...?

Hey Everyone!

I know that a lot of you guys are really into Guitar Hero...well, I have some exciting news. A new game has just been released called "Guitar Praise," which is pretty much a Christian version of GH. Yeah, that's right. I'm pretty excited about it. It might even be something that should make its way onto some of your Christmas lists this year. Just sayin'... :)

The song list features some of the most popular Christian bands today, like Skillet, Switchfoot, Casting Crowns, Superchic[k], Thousand Foot Krutch, and Newsboys, as well as a few tracks from a couple of '80's bands.

The official website is http://www.guitarpraise.com/ I'll have to be honest, the promo video is pretty corny, but the game looks awesome :) The game is actually on sale right now at musichristian.com and christianbook.com.

Oh, and if you're a DDR fanatic, they also have a Christian version of that, called "Dance Praise." Check it out!

Harvest Party!!!

Our annual Harvest Party was last Saturday, and it was amazing! We ate hotdogs and s'mores roasted over the fire, played some football, and carved pumpkins. Then it was back to the church for a Carless Drive-In and Facing the Giants! It was a great night -- thanks for coming! A huge THANK YOU to Amy and Jason for once again hosting the party!!!

Hey Guys!
If you haven't seen FIREPROOF yet, you really need to go...and tell your parents they need to see it, too! It's a great movie with a great message...and it's doing well, too. It was #4 across the country, on a very busy movie release weekend. It's by the same people who made Facing the Giants, and I personally think this one is even better! Volleyball & Car-less Drive-In

Last Saturday night was pretty awesome. First of all, we played some volleyball out in the lawn behind the youth room. The recent volleyball matches in the Olympics must have inspired us all, because the competition was fierce :)

After volleyball, we enjoyed some pizza together, and then it was time for ....drum roll please....the CAR-LESS DRIVE-IN!!! We viewed The Ride, projected onto the side of the church, and it went from the ground to the roof! It was pretty awesome...except fot the part when *SOMEONE* flipped the wrong breaker and we had to restart the movie (oops....sorry guys!).

All in all, it was a pretty great night...we'll have to do it again sometime! :)

Hey guys! Just wanted to remind you that tomorrow night at 7:00 pm we will be playing volleyball, and then at 8:30, the Car-less Drive-In starts! Make sure your family knows that everyone is invited to the movie! Everything will be taking place here at the church...make sure you bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on during the movie. VBS!!!

VBS was awesome this year! Here's Amy Lamb's recap of the week...

Vacation Bible School is the largest outreach ministry here at Memorial Baptist Church. We held our Bible School July 21st-25th, from 6:30pm-9:00pm. We had a total enrollemnt for the week of 261 and the average nightly attendance was 190. We used Lifeway’s Outrigger Island curriculum. The Hawaiin themed lessons and video were exciting and the location was of course exotic!! Not only the location of the video was exotic, but so was our sanctuary! The stage was transformed by a very creative member of our church, Sandra Cooper. She designed the exploding volcano, the thatched roof tiki hut, and best of all, a waterfall, along with towering palm trees! We felt like we were truly in the tropics!!
The week revolved around 5 main lessons, revealed each night in the opening video clip. Monday: "God Is Real" Tuesday: "Jesus Is God’s Son" Wednesday: "Jesus Is The Only Way" Thursday: "The Bible Is God’s Word" Friday: "My Actions Show What I Believe" The message of Salvation was explained on Wednesday through the ABC’s. A: Admit to God you are a sinner, repent and turn from your sin B: Believe Jesus is God’s Son and that He died on a cross and rose again C: Commit your life to God and confess Him as your Saviour and your Lord. We praise the Lord that 11 children proclaimed these ABC’s this year at Vacation Bible School!! This is the evidence that VBS stands alongside Memorial’s Mission statement of "Proclaiming Jesus Christ, The WAY, the TRUTH, the LIFE" We give God the glory and honor for what took place during VBS this year! It was a success and God’s family tree grew a little larger!
Our offerings during the week of VBS, are collected in the form of a competition. Everyone is divided into 2 teams on Monday, the Blue and Orange Teams this year. We see which team can bring in the most pennies, nickles & dimes, quarters and lastly dollars, a diferent coin for each night of the week, Tues. through Fri. We collected a total of $603.00. The monies were dispersed to several different ministries; CEF of Adams County, Youth Missions, Construction Mission Trip, and Memorial’s Food Pantry. We also collected canned goods one night to benefit our Food Pantry. Along with giving an offering, we award points to the teams who participate in the game during the opening. At the end of the week ALL the thousands of points are tallied and a winner is announced. This year, the ORANGE team was victorious!! Each child on the orange team recieved a coupon from Rita’s Italian Ice of Gettysburg for a free child’s ice! (THANK YOU RITA’S!!!) As well as the winning team getting a prize, A LOT of other children take home a prize too!!
Friday night is very exciting, because the person who brought the most visitors is announced! They get first pick of any prize they want! And let me tell you we have A LOT of prizes...all donated by one VERY generous woman!! The first prize to be picked is usually the bike or some other BIG prize that is donated as well. This year was no exception, first pick and the bike was gone! After that, every child that was here all week gets to pick a prize, ranging from doll babies, to cars, to book bags, to lunch boxes, to books, to pencils, to puzzles....the list goes on and on!!
Along with MANY teachers and staff, our youth were a terrific help this year. They assisted in classes, helped deliver snack, lead songs, and worked in the nursery. To say a BIG thank you to them, they recieved a FREE sundae coupon from Dairy Queen of Gettysburg. (THANKYOU D.Q.!!!)
Those were the highlights of VBS 2008! Thank you to all who worked so diligently!!

Gettysburg BLITZ!!!

Fresh off a recent mission trip to Ocean City, MD, the Memorial youth group was at it again on Wednesday. This time, however, they were ministering in their own backyard. Marty, Jared, Amanda and I teamed up with the US Christian Commission to help with Gettysburg Blitz. This ministry focuses on the thousands of tourists coming through Gettysburg during reenactment-week. Our group handed out water to passers-by, and walked the streets, handing out free tickets to a nightly “God and Country” presentation.

The rest of the church family got in on the act on Wednesday night, joining the youth in Alumni Park to be part of the God and Country service, which featured music, a message, and even an appearance by Abraham Lincoln (a.k.a. USCC Director John Wega). It was a great day of ministry, and all involved look forward to partnering with the USCC in the future.

We're Back!

We are back home in PA after an awesome week of ministry in Ocean City, MD!
We took hundreds of pictures and hours of video footage, and there are many stories to tell, so over the next few weeks, we will be posting all of that here on the MBC Youth blog. Make sure to check back often so you won't miss anything!

I just want to say thank you so much to all of you who supported our team both financially and with your prayers. We couldn't have done it without your support!!!

One Last Time...

Well, last night was our final Training/Planning session for our mission trip to Ocean City! I can't believe we'll be leaving in 2 days! We started last night with a time of focused prayer for the trip, and then I made some final announcements, and we had one last opportunity to meet in our teams to work out any last minute issues. Then we packed the trailer, and that was it.
On Saturday morning, we will meet at the church and drive to Ocean City. We'll be there for a week. I ask that you all please pray for us as we are ministering. Here is a list of thing to pray for:

For our health and safety
For the vehicles we are taking
For the Children we will be ministering to every morning
For everyone we will meet, that God would already be preparing their hearts for His Word
For all of the summer missionaries we will be working with, and everyone at Ocean City Baptist Church
For our attitudes
For unity among our group

Thanks so much for your prayers...we appreciate it more than you could know!

Graduates' Banquet

An annual tradition was observed this past Sunday night at Memorial. The fellowship hall was packed for the 2008 Graduates’ Banquet, a time of fellowship and celebrating the accomplishments of our high school and college graduates. The evening started, of course, with food. The delicious meal was prepared by the kitchen crew and church members who brought covered dishes and desserts.

After the meal was over, it was time to honor the graduates. Jared and Justin Day and Brittany Opperman provided special music, with the Days playing “In Christ Alone” and Brittany performing “Through The Years,” a song that she wrote for Adams County Christian Academy’s graduation.

Jeff Day was the speaker for the evening. He used his message to challenge the graduates and to thank those who played a role in making them who they are today. It was a “hands-on” message – the graduates had to work together to build something significant with tools and scraps of wood and metal they were given. The end result was a cross, the thing we should each build our lives upon.

The evening concluded with each graduate receiving a gift from the church and saying a few words about their future plans. It was a great evening of food, fellowship and celebration. Congratulations, Class of 2008!

Car Wash Fund Raiser

This past Saturday, our area was under a heat advisory that forced many people to stay indoors. That didn’t slow Memorial’s youth group down, though. From 10 am until 2 pm, a group of youth and adults washed cars and sold soda in the church parking lot to raise money for the upcoming mission trip to Ocean City, MD. After sweating it out and washing everything from Pathfinders to Punch-Buggies, the Lord blessed and provided over $300, meeting the goal for the day.

We have one more fund raiser to finish up for the trip, and we need your help! If you are helping to fill up a sports bottle with change, please bring it back to the church as soon as possible. Every little bit helps! Thanks for all of your support so far!

ACCA Graduation 2008

On June 1st, Adams County Christian Academy said goodbye to the largest senior class in school history. Sixteen students, including five of our own, walked across Memorial’s stage to receive the piece of paper that represented their life’s work to this point.

Abbey Stiles was recognized as valedictorian, and Faythe Grace as salutatorian, although the margin of difference between the two was very slim. Both fought back tears as they remembered years gone by and challenged their classmates to live their lives for Christ.

Other students were also recognized for their achievements. Jared Day received a scholarship in memory of Adam Cole, a local firefighter who was killed in the line of duty last year. The award was presented b y Cole’s uncle, Greg Cole. Day is currently taking classes to become a firefighter and EMT. A special Fruit of the Spirit Award, which was determined by the vote of the senior class, was awarded to Brittany Opperman.

Pastor Steve Baker had the privilege of delivering the commencement address, which was full of humor, personal stories, and challenges for the graduates. Mr. Roy Frampton, a favorite teacher among the seniors, also offered some parting words to the class.

The evening was also filled with music, as the ACCA band and choir lent their talents to the occasion. Brittany Opperman showcased a song that she penned called “Through The Years,” and the entire senior class, accompanied by Abbey Stiles on piano and Jared Day on guitar, ended the night with their rendition of “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.”

Overall, it was a wonderful evening of marking milestones, recognizing achievements, reminiscing and praising our Creator.

Ok, so that was the formal, official story. Here’s some of my random thoughts about the evening and some of the funny stuff that didn’t make it into the story for the church’s site.

--The choir sang “I Hope You Dance” and the seniors sang solos. Brittany definitely opened the floodgates during her solo, if you know what I mean, and I was just like, “this is going to be a long night.” Not that I’m against crying at graduation; I was just concerned for her, because I knew she had to sing again later. The time came for her to sing the song that she had written, though, and everything went amazingly…except for a technical glitch that Alex and Jared had to help fix. The song, though, is amazing, and she sang it flawlessly. I could honestly see that song becoming a hit and being played at graduations across the country some day.

--The ceremony almost ended about 30 minutes early. I’m not sure what exactly happened, but Mr. Arrison gave his parting words and asked the audience to stand and acknowledge the graduates. The problem was that there was still a song to be sung and a tribute video to be shown. I wish you could have seen the looks on the graduates’ faces when he almost skipped all of that. Priceless. :) They got his attention, though, and the rest of the ceremony went off without a problem.

--The sanctuary was PACKED. It has been quite awhile since I’ve seen it so full for something other than a funeral.

--For the record, I would just like to say how grateful I am for ACCA and all of the people that serve the Lord there. It is such a sacrifice to teach at a Christian school, and I thank you all for your service.

Mission Trip Training

People have so many different views of what mission trips are all about. To some, a mission trip is nothing but a vacation with a few bits of Christian service thrown in on the side. To others, it is a time of hard-core, selfless service for the Lord, with no thought for themselves.

I guess by the nature of the place we are going this summer, our trip to Ocean City will hopefully be a good mix of fun and ministry, with the emphasis on ministry. We have been training for months for this trip. Back in March, the youth began an evangelism training course called “The Way of the Master.” This is not a sugar-coated, let’s hold hands and sing kum-by-ya method by any means. I can’t wait to see how the Lord uses our youth to witness for Him on this trip.

Besides evangelism training, we also had a training session on how to effectively teach children. This will be especially helpful, since the main thrust of our ministry will be “Surf and Sand Clubs” for children in local campgrounds each morning. Mr. Bruce Hoover from Child Evangelism Fellowship was with us one Wednesday night to train us in this area. He provided us with many helpful tips and methods that I’m sure will be incredibly useful while we’re there.

There are also many organizational and logistic-related items that we have been taking care of. Without the right guidance, this task could be a nightmare, but Pastor Baker and Amy Lamb have been doing an awesome job of getting everything together and organizing everything. “Parent’s Night Out” takes the most planning and organization while we are there, but the budgeting and arrangements that have been taking place for months leading up to the trip are also frustrating and time consuming…so much goes into a trip like this, both in the “spotlight” and behind the scenes.

Well, we leave next Saturday. Please pray for us as we go, and pray for the people that we will encounter. Pray that God will already be preparing their hearts to hear what He has to say through us.
